Chapter Six

Conscious of Gavin’s gaze, so much so that she could almost imagine a burning hot spot between her shoulder blades, Imogen greeted Sister Sullivan’s wrath with something akin to relief. She could put up with that, just so long as she could get away from Gavin, and the perturbing effect the rippling aura of his personality seemed to be having over her.

“Straight into Outpatients, first on the right,” snapped Sister, her voice sharp and rasping with annoyance as she thrust a clipboard into Imogen’s hand. “Check that all the patients have arrived, then wait until you’re told what to do next.”

“Yes, Sister,” said Imogen, taking the clipboard and starting down the corridor.

“No, wait!” Gavin’s voice halted her. Slowly she turned back, just in time to see him switch on his fabulous “it’s for you alone because you’re special” type of smile, she thought sourly, watching Sister Sullivan respond. Unfolding like a delicate little crocus to the sun, reflected Imogen cynically.

“I’m sure Sister has the examination room ready. Nurse can bring the first patient along as soon as she’s checked them all in—will that be all right, Sister?”

“Oh yes, Mr. Adams,” twittered Sister Sullivan, “what a good idea!” She turned back to Imogen. “Did you hear that, Nurse?” The twitter had gone, to be replaced by a beady-eyed stare.

“Yes, Sister,” said Imogen, kicking a quick glance in Gavin’s direction, but she could see his mind was already on the clinic ahead. Having used his smile to get what he wanted, namely the clinic off to a good start, he had changed into second gear and had already forgotten both of them. Not that Sister Sullivan will notice, thought Imogen, as Sister turned back to walk down the corridor beside the tall, dark consultant. She was still basking in the memory of that flashing smile!

It didn’t take Imogen long to check through the eleven patients waiting for colposcopy, and as soon as she had finished she accompanied the first patient, Mrs. Reed, along to the examination room.

Mrs. Reed was terrified, not having the slightest idea of what to expect as unfortunately her GP had told her nothing. Imogen set her mind at rest as best she could, explaining to her what would happen. “The doctor looks at your cervix through a colposcope, which is a special kind of binocular, but first he puts in a few drops of dye, which enables him to see any abnormal cells more clearly.” She didn’t say it was a fairly undignified procedure from the patient’s point of view, and hoped Mrs. Reed wouldn’t tense up too much.

She needn’t have worried. Gavin put the patient at her ease with a few well chosen words, explaining what he would be doing step by step. “Now, have you any questions to ask before we begin?” he asked.

His down-to-earth, practical manner reassured Mrs. Reed, and Imogen noticed she stopped twisting the handkerchief she was carrying into tight little knots, and had already started to relax, but not quite. Then
